Cedar Shakes & Shingles – Hand Split, Re-Sawn, Tapersawn Shakes and 5x, Royal and Perfection Shingles

Our cedar shakes and shingles come in a variety of types. We have hand-split, re-sawn and taper-sawn shakes. We have an assortment of shingles including “5x”, “Royal” and “Perfection”. Our shakes and shingles come in an assortment of lengths, thicknesses and grades. Each has a different type of use.

Hand-Split & Re-Sawn Shakes

Our high-quality western red cedar shake features a split face and sawn back, so one side is naturally rustic in appearance while the other side is smooth.

Lengths

  • 18-inch (45.72 cm)
  • 24-inch (60.96 cm)

Thickness – Ranges from 3/8-inch to 2-inch plus. The most common thicknesses are:

  • “Medium” 1/2-inch (1.27 cm)
  • “Heavy” 3/4-inch (1.905 cm)

Grades

  • Premium (100% Vertical Grain)
  • #1 Grade (80% Vertical Grain)
  • #2 Grade (Mixed Grain)
  • #3 Grade

Usage

These shakes are popular in traditional and historical homes and ranchers, as they are designed to blend with their rustic surroundings.

Our western red cedar shingles are precision-cut to provide a uniform smooth sawn finish.

Usage

Shingles are mainly used for roofing and siding.

Cedar Tapersawn Shakes

Our western red cedar taper-sawn shakes fall between resawn shakes and cedar shingles. Although it is sawn on both sides, it is thicker, less precise, and has a stronger shadowline than a cedar shingle.

  • 18-inch (45.72 cm)
  • 24-inch (60.96 cm)

Thickness – choose between:

  • Standard 5/8-inch (1.5875 cm)
  • “Heavy” 3/4-inch (1.905 cm)
  • 7/8-inch (2.2225 cm)
  • 1-inch (2.54 cm)

Grades

  • Premium (100% Vertical Grain)
  • #1 Grade (80% Vertical Grain)
  • #2 Grade (Mixed Grain)
  • #3 Grade

Usage

Tapersawn Shakes are commonly used in residential structures.

CEDAR SHAKE TYPES

Cedar Roofing - Handsplit and Resawn Cedar ShakeHandsplit and Resawn: Split face exposed with a naturally rustic appearance, sawn on back. Available in Premium and Number 1 Grades.
Cedar Roofing - Tapersawn Cedar ShakeTapersawn: Sawn on both sides for a semi­ textured look with a stronger shadowline than a shingle. Available in Premium and Number 1 Grades.
Cedar Roofing - Tapersplit Cedar ShakeTapersplit: Produced by hand, using a sharp bladed steel froe and a mallet. Premium Grade only. (i.e. 1000/o edge grain)

Cedar Roofing - Straight-Split Cedar ShakeStraight-Split: Produced by machine or in the same manner as tapersplit shakes. Premium Grade only.

CEDAR SHINGLE TYPES

Cedar Roofing - No 1 Grade Cedar SingleNumber 1 Blue Label: The highest grade of shingles for roofs and sidewalls. These top-grade shingles are 1000/o heartwood, 100% clear and 1000/o edge grain. Available in 16″ or 18″ or 24″ lengths.

Cedar Roofing - No 2 Grade Cedar SingleNumber 2 Red Label: A good grade for many applications. Not less than 10″ clear on 16″ shingles, 11″ clear on 18″ shingles and 16″ clear on 24″ shingles. Flat grain and limited sapwood are permitted in this grade.

Cedar Roofing - No 3 Grade Cedar SingleNumber 3 Black Label: A utility grade for economy applications and secondary buildings. Not less than 6″ clear on 16″ and 18″ shingles, 10″ clear on 24″ shingles.

All Premium or #1 Grade products are available with pressure impregnated fire retardant or preservative treatment.
